Migrant workers reduced to tiers

ImmigrationThe Immigration Asylum and Nationality (2006) Act will take effect this year. Much of the old law will be swept away, and a new system is being gradually implemented, which introduces a multi-tiered approach to applicants.

Employers of migrant workers would do well to keep up-to-date with legislation, as penalties for employing workers illegally may include up to two years in prison, and in some cases fines of up to £10,000 per illegal worker.

Age discrimination: Goes both ways

An 18 year old female office worker has been awarded 26 weeks’ loss of pay as well as a sum of £5,000 for injury to feelings. An employment tribunal which found that the claimant had been discriminated against by her employer in breach of the Employment Equality Age (Regulations) 2006.

Firearms - Lock up or lose them

We are at the end of the shooting season when for many, the gun is cleaned and put away until next needed. Shooting enthusiasts should be on their guard though, against falling foul of firearm legislation.

Falling foul of the Firearms Act (1968) is a serious matter which carries with it weighty penalties. These vary from six months imprisonment and a £400 fine at the Magistrates’ Court, to a maximum of ten years in jail and an unlimited fine at the Crown Court for the most serious offence, possession or distributing of prohibited weapons.
